CITY OF GREATER BENDIGO ENVIRONMENTAL LOCAL LAW No 3
The spirit of the Law is to reduce smoke from inefficient and inappropriate burning within residential parts of the City of Greater Bendigo.

KEY POINTS
1. The use of incinerators is banned at all times.
2. The burning of garden refuse is prohibited and that includes organic waste, produced or accumulated in or on any land, including grass clippings, mulch, garden prunings and leaves. (Does not include branches)
3. Prohibits the burning of cardboard and newspaper in an open-air environment at all times.
4. The burning of solid fuels such as wood (eg. branches and twigs or as a bonfire) in the open air is only allowed on a Tuesday and Saturday. There is no longer any set hours for this to occur. Permission from the Council Local Laws Department is required on days other than Tuesday and Saturday.
5. This Local Law applies only to the Residential Area.

FIRES for COOKING or WARMTH (ie. barbecues and campfires)
The intent of Council is to allow these fires at anytime (except on days of Total Fire Ban) provided they are lit for the purpose of cooking food or warmth. No permission is required but certain conditions must be met:
• An area of 3 metres all around and above the fire must be completely cleared of flammable material
• An adult is in attendance at all times
• The wind speed is less than 10kph
• The fire should be at least 5 metres from the property boundary or any building.
• No garden refuse, cardboard or paper are being burnt.
